The NBA may be on hiatus, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still watch professional basketball in Indiana. And I’m not talking about the WNBA’s Indiana Fever, either. The Indy Pro-Am is a summer basketball league featuring a variety of NBA players, college players, and a large contingency of former local hoops stars who are currently playing overseas. The games occur every Tuesday and Thursday at the IUPUI basketball gym, known by Jaguars fans as The Jungle, and the cost is free. On-court action begins at 6 pm, and there are four games total each night. The Indy Pro-Am, which is put together by former IUPUI great Carlos Knox, is currently winding down, with the first round of the playoffs just concluding. Among the highlights from the playoff action:
The Red Team (all eight teams go by their color name) featured former Indiana superstars Eric Gordon and DJ White, along with Broad Ripple High School graduate and current Indiana Pacers player, George Hill. Rounding out the squad where current IU stars Victor Oladipo and Christian Watford. Needless to say, the Red Team won handily against a squad that featured Marshall Strickland and Roderick “Hot Rod” Wilmont.
Other notable players that have been seen at the Indy Pro Am over the past few weeks include: former area high school stars Chris Thomas, Justin Gage, and Gordon Hayward, as well as several current Butler Bulldogs like Kyle Marshall and Chrishawn Hopkins. JaJuan Johnson and E’Twaun Moore, recent graduates of the Purdue Boilermakers, also have participated in the league. There have also been NBA players like Alec Burks, Christian Eyenga, Lance Stephenson, and Zach Randolph have been seen hooping it up in The Jungle as well.
So if you’re jonesing for hoops action, and don’t want to wait for the 2011 NBA Season to get underway, make your way down to the campus of IUPUI and see the best basketball action in the state while you still can.
