2010 UM Show Review from BroadRippleTickets.com
Umphreys McGee made another visit to Naptown on July 17, 2010. These guys are probably the best kept secret in live music right now but we can get to that later. After a week of heavy storms here in Indy we headed to the show wondering if the fifty cent plastic ponchos we had would be able to ward off our daily monsoon here in town. All you had to do was look North and you could see it heading into town. Well there ended up being fewer raindrops that night than Umphreys Mcgee fans as weather did spit a bit at the crowd but still allowed us to Rock!

The band took the stage and in true UM fashion stirred up the crowd with spacey 1 minute of noodling and then went straight into “Push the Pig” and older UM song that simply rocks, the show continued for about 25 minutes before the music stopped. It was a scenic night on The Lawn at White River State Park as the set began you could see through the stage setup and see the impending storm continuing to roll towards Indy as the show went on. The sun continued to set and the first set did too, Umphreys continued the jam as the lights became a more prevalent part of the stage set. Now lets pause this heart warming story for a second and talk about these lights….. Umphreys brings an light show that seemlessly flows with the band improvisational style. This might be a bit much but it appeared as is if they were traveling with TK3′s, one of the highest grade and most capable stage lights bands tour with. Most acts feel priveleged to have any of these light much less that massive amount that UM brings with them.

So now back to rock…. As the first set progressed so had the threatening thunderstorm’s position outside of town, which at times sent spider webs of lightening from cloud to cloud often times synching up with the band as the crowd cheered with approval. Its seems as if mother nature was simply adding her light show as UM progressed into a ridiculously funky version of The Talking Heads “Girlfriend” and closed the first set.

Now here we are at set break where bands usually linger about do whatever…. Umphreys seeing that the rain is headed our way comes back on stage after one of the shortest set breaks in Jam Band history. The second set started with JaJunk and went all the way through Shine on You Crazy Diamond, Wappy Sprayberry, Miss Tinkle’s Overature, Thuderstruck and then finally paused after heading back to Miss Tinkle as many of us did during this amazing display of improv rock and new invention. Why am seeing this band at The Lawn and not at DEER CREEK? The show carried on and every time you think it might be it a new jam would start giving the jam crazed UM fans everything they want to see.

Here the bottom line from the staff of Broad Ripple Tickets. GO SEE UMPHREYS MCGEE! Do you like Music? Do you like lights? Do you like ROCK? Are you unafraid to have fun and be surrounded by amazingly nice people? If you answered yes to any of these questions and you have not seen UM, then you have only been cheating yourself my friend…..
